Sigiriya

Sigiriya, often referred to as the “Lion Rock,” is an ancient rock fortress located in the Matale District of Sri Lanka’s Central Province. Rising approximately 180 meters above the surrounding plains, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was established by King Kashyapa I (477–495 AD) as his new capital.

The king constructed his palace atop the rock, adorning its sides with vibrant frescoes. Halfway up, a gateway in the form of an enormous lion was built, giving Sigiriya its name, derived from “Sinhagiri” or “Lion Rock.”

Today, visitors can explore the extensive ruins of this ancient city, which include remnants of the upper palace on the flat summit, a mid-level terrace featuring the Lion Gate and the Mirror Wall with its ancient graffiti and lower palaces that cling to the slopes below.

The surrounding area boasts elaborate water gardens, moats and ramparts, showcasing sophisticated urban planning and engineering marvels of the time. Climbing to the summit rewards travellers with panoramic views of the lush landscape, making Sigiriya a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
