Polonnaruwa
Polonnaruwa served as the second capital of Sri Lanka following the decline of Anuradhapura in 993 AD. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features a well-preserved archaeological park that offers a glimpse into the island’s medieval history. The city flourished under the reign of King Parakramabahu I in the 12th century, who developed it into a thriving commercial and religious hub.
Visitors can explore the monumental ruins of this garden-city, including the Royal Palace complex, the Quadrangle with its impressive Vatadage and the Gal Vihara, which showcases a series of magnificent Buddha statues carved into granite. The intricate carvings and architectural marvels found throughout Polonnaruwa reflect the advanced craftsmanship of the era, making it a treasure trove for history buffs and cultural enthusiasts.
