Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka’s most celebrated ancient city and a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a treasure trove of Buddhist heritage and architectural marvels. Among its many wonders is the Thuparama Dagoba, believed to enshrine the Buddha’s collarbone, surrounded by a striking frieze of carved elephants. The city’s most revered site is the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi Tree, grown from a sapling of the very tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. Planted over 2,250 years ago, it holds the distinction of being the world’s oldest authenticated tree, lovingly cared for by generations of a dedicated family. Pilgrims from across the world gather here to pay homage, immersing themselves in the spiritual atmosphere of this ancient capital.

Beyond its sacred sites, Anuradhapura boasts remarkable structures like the massive Ruwanweliseya Stupa, the Isurumuniya Rock Temple, the Royal Twin Baths and vast irrigation tanks that reflect the ingenuity of ancient engineering. As part of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, the city also provides easy access to other historical gems such as the rock fortress of Sigiriya, the cave temples of Dambulla and the cultural heart of Kandy. Whether you’re tracing the footsteps of ancient kings, admiring centuries-old artwork or exploring the surrounding countryside, Anuradhapura offers an unforgettable journey through Sri Lanka’s rich history and spiritual traditions.
